Our Mission
The purpose of the Exeter Historical Society is to operate as a non-profit organization that cultivates social interaction and friendship among its members and community; to further the interest and education in the study of local history; to collect, preserve and display data, articles, and objects touching the history of Exeter, Maine; and to answer requests for research assistance from individuals or organizations pertaining to Exeter’s history.

Meetings

EHS meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month at 6:00pm (unless otherwise stated). They are held in the EHS room located in the Exeter Town Office at 1221 Stetson Road in Exeter.

The Exeter Historical Society would like to invite you to our Cabin Fever Series Event: The Golden Age of Postcards on Saturday, March 28th at 2 o’clock. During this event Kevin Johnson from the Penobscot Marine Museum will be giving a presentation (approx. 1 hour) on the history of the Eastern Illustrating and Publishing Company and the role they played in the golden age of postcards. The P. M. M. currently owns the Eastern Illustrating and Publishing Company collection of glass plates and film negatives consisting of over 50,000 images. Kevin will focus on images of towns such as Exeter, Garland, Corinth, Stetson, Corinna, Dexter and Charleston. Admission to the event is free to the public. We will be providing food and drinks, by donation. We hope you join us for our last Cabin Fever Series event this season!

Come visit Exeter, Maine on Saturday, February 28th for a day full of learning about the past! The Crocker Family Forest is hosting their "2026 Fill The Ice House" Event from 9am-1pm. Visit their farm at 905 Greenbush Road in Exeter to learn about the traditional ways of harvesting pond ice. Then come up to the Exeter Town Office at 2pm to warm up and see us for our Cabin Fever Series, Part Two: From Sap to Syrup! We will be showing the film, "The Maple Sugaring Story" that teaches the history and process behind making maple syrup. It's a great film for all ages! (28 mins) We hope you have a sweet tooth because we will have many maple treats available including Maple Syrup Flights, to sample different grades of syrup, and Maple Pancake Sundaes! We will also have a hands-on educational display and will be joined by Cider Hill Maple Farm who will have a display of products, and Raven's Nest Face Painting for a fun touch! FREE ADMISSION!
